Ok, I was just going to let my first post about this whole thing be my first and last statement but this feisty one just had to say something after getting an e-mail about the Malacanang’s involvement on this matter. Oh really? They’re calling what the fictional character Susan said a “racial slur”. Really?

Ok then if that’s what Philippine government wants, then I want an apology from all those Filipinos who says the “N” word as a form of greeting to their jologs friends. Here in America, the “N” word is a racial slur against the African-Americans. I’ve heard some Pinoys callously say that word thinking they’re cool. Thinking they’re Hip-Hop. Or just from lack of thinking, period.

I also want an apology from Filipinos who hates Americans because they think any American walking around is a rapist or looking for a Filipina bride.

I also want an apology from those Filipinos in the entertainment industry who makes fun at their audiences for the sake of a “good” game show.

This Malacanang involvement is another ploy to misdirect REAL issues of the country. They want citizens to get distracted from all the corruption these politicians are doing on the side. Let’s pick on a fictional show. Let’s forget about the minor kids on the street selling sampaguita leis so they could have food at the table. Let’s forget about the taxes from honest workers and OFW’s those big people put in their own pockets so they could have 5 maids, 5 drivers, and mistresses on the side. Yes, let’s focus on a 40-something fictional character from a fictional TV-show. Let’s not think about the whole concept of the show at all. That from it’s first inception, Wisteria Lane is a walking and talking generalization all put in one fictional vain town.

Let’s distract the people from the fact that if another flood happens in another province, no help will come and residents will be dangling from the roof of their sinking house. Let’s ignore the Law violators from establishments who gets licenses to operate even without proper EXIT doors that might have helped 100+ high school graduates from a fire years ago. Who cares about the farmers who are breaking their backs just so they could send their kids to college. Let’s pretend the living arrangement in squatter areas don’t exist.

Let’s forget the fact that these problems and more have existed for years and years yet solutions seem to be on hiatus or on AWOL. I may not know much about politics in the Philippines but I do know that these problems exist. How about the government focus on that instead of wasting away time and effort because some feelings got hurt from a ditzy, clumsy, ignorant TV character.

I’m probably going to be alone on this sentiment but oh well.

Interestingly enough, the Latino community is not asking an apology for a cheating, lying and money hungry whore character name Gabriela Solis, portrayed by Eva Longoria.

Nor are Real Estate broker community asking an apology for another whore character named Edie who happens to be a Real Estate agent.

How about all the housewives in the world? they’re not asking for an apology for a mis-characterization of housewives from Wisteria Lane.

I should think Nuns would ask an apology when a butt-kicking Nun was on the show last year who had a beat down scene with Gaby, in the Church no less.

How about the Chinese community for a Chinese maid surrogate character who turned out to be pregnant with an African-American baby. Hmmm, I didn’t hear any uproar on that character.

OI VEY!

You’re right on that one, FeistyMomma. Very well said. I don’t think I could add anything to it. And anyway, I’m also writing my own reaction to this in my blog.

  • FeistyMomma says:

Looking forward to reading it. Will be refreshing the page until it’s posted :)

  • noemi says:

Oh yes I saw that hilarious nun episode. Found it funny and wondered if the Catholic nuns were offended. This is carrying it too far. I never imagined Malacanang would go this far. haha. It’s pathetic that real issues are not petitioned. sigh.

I am trying to understand why there is so much hype though. Is it because compared to other shows , Desperate Housewives is a hit TV show with DVD’s showing in a lot of countries. I think that’s where the uproar is coming from.

  • FeistyMomma says:

Noemi, must be. I haven’t heard anything about it here so who knows what the show’s producers have heard. I’m just afraid that it’s going to backfire on us. People will make fun of our “sensitivity” and not knowing when to laugh at jokes/jabs. I can almost see it in all Night time Talk shows.

  • Kris says:

So they now know about the outrage(heard na na nagapologize na raw ang DH). I wonder how will they react when they will know that we keep on asking for apologies for their racial slurs on us, but on our side, here in the Philippines, we continue to promote racial slurs against our own and other nationalities.

    Nakakahiya.

  • FeistyMomma says:

they have? well good for those petitioners I guess. but the show will move on and this Sunday’s episode will make everybody forget this damn thing even happened. what a waste of time.

  • julie says:

Dexie, my hubby’s take on this was something like Pinoys are just super-sensitive but they don’t know that they do that kind of stuff, maligning others based on color and nationality. But when the tables are turned, we cry “Foul”. I agree with him.

  • FeistyMomma says:

oh exactly. what’s good for the goose is not good for the gander I guess.

  • Kris says:

Ate Julie, I really agree with you. Just watch our sitcoms and comedy shows. It’s even worse than the supposed to be insult by Desperate Housewives.

  • mare says:

Looks like the appeal worked, someone apologized!

  • Kris says:

^But then, Filipinos will forget not to discriminate against other people. It’s a vicious cycle even with apology.

  • FeistyMomma says:

Yup. just another day in pinoy blogosphere… and that’s for 1st week of the month… 3 more weeks to go..LOL

  • MDUSA says:

we complained because we are Filipino Doctors in the U.S. who were offended. It questioned our credibility and pride. If the producers/writers of the show did think it was referring to the NURSING exam fiasco last year then they are mistaken. Not Doctors. Hence the need to Correct it, lest we further propagate it (not based on facts or even fiction). I am happy with the ABC apology. Thats it. No further. Other issues and racial slurs regarding the Philippines…might have some historical context…But MD is a noble profession, for it to be tainted by careless remarks..needs to be challenged and corrected. I am for free speech…but this was clearly a mistake on the writer. Now if you guys think that the petition was wrong. Then you do not understand us. If its regarding what was requested afterwards ex Donation…then i agree with you that it sounds too much. I praise all the Doctors who supported us. Also the non-doctors who helped. But let us keep it regarding Filipino MD and their schools. The rest(non-MD – who are opposed to the petition) cannot understand us anyway, so whats the use convincing them.

  • Kris says:

MDUSA, you obviously did not get the whole point of the other side of the coin.

I wonder what most Filipino who signed the petition think of what is happening to Myanmar?

What do you think about Filipinos discriminating on fellow Filipinos as well as other people?

How many of us care about our Domestic Helpers being raped abroad

Hardly anyone speaks of these more bothersome issues. Hardly any Filipinos would correct THEIR OWN mentality against prejudice towr5ds other people.

Yes, MD is a decent profession. But so is being a maid and security guard, diba?

Oh, didn’t one Filipina senator say that the Chinese invented corruption. That’s worse than the line from Desperate Housewives. The Chinese asked for apology but it ended there.Apology was accepted. They did not ask for donations, scholarships like some Pinoys are doing.
