How Does A Tween Pay His Dues?

caine-mowing4

He can by doing a few household chores of course. Like doing the dishes, sweeping the floor, cleaning his room, and mowing at least half of the lawn. I’m sure my husband and I are not the only parents in the world who’ve taught their children the value of responsibilities. You want something, work for it. Santa Ain’t Real!!!

Motherhood & Burnt Cookies

Years ago I learned what the “Burnt Toast” philosophy is when Teri Hatcher was promoting her book, Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life”. The realization was loud and clear that YES, I do burn some toasts and because I hate wasting anything, I’d brush that black stuff out, spread either butter or jam, then eat it while the rest of the family gets the best toasts. I am not really sure where Teri said this (might be on Oprah), but I completely agreed with her that yah know, we should stop that. Why can’t we have the best toast just like everybody else? It’s of course a metaphor for pretty much every “martyr” acts we do for our loved one’s sake. And Mothers are usually the ones in the forefront. We’re not gullible, we’re just instinctively nurturers.

But There’s A Practice Test For Math Today

Guess what?, I’m about to talk about my son. I know some people are wondering why I don’t talk about him as much as I used to. Let me just say that he’s going on 13. Parents with kids that age will understand that pre-teens would prefer it if their parents would stay away as far as they could from them. Well, that’s exaggeration but you know what I mean. My son also has an “online life” these days. Don’t worry, it’s limited and very much protected. What I’m trying to say is that, I don’t want him or his friends stumbling something about him online that might make him feel embarrassed or whatever those pre-teen hormones have dictated him to feel. I’m still trying to figure out how to hide all the stuff I’ve shared online from when he was born until he was 11. I could delete all of them here but arrrggghhhh, I’m lazy. I’ll take my chances, and cross my fingers real tight that he doesn’t discover them or if/when he does, he remembers how much he loves me.

So, both kids are sick. My son actually started feeling icky 2 days ago. Of course, his sister got it and was feeling terrible all day yesterday. She got a burst of energy at 7pm though and wanted to go for a walk so we did. She walked to our usual destination but wanted to be carried on the way back home. I’m getting too old for this shit. My freaking back hurts but eh, she showered me with kisses on the cheeks as soon as we saw our driveway. I was smiling while my back was crying quietly.

Anyway, back to my son…

Why Do I Even Watch News?

I mean I guess it’s good to know what’s going on so we have to watch news. Or we could just read it online, right? But before or after dinner, HLN news is what’s playing on our TV. And these days, the news in that particular channel is dominated by kids missing, kids being stalked, another stupid mother who left her child in the car while getting a tan, a certain Teacher being told to take down her pictures on Facebook or else, etc. It’s the kids news that just gets to me. My paranoia and pessimistic personality is not helping my sanity at all. After watching the news about a 12 yr old kid being stalked on a broad daylight, played on screen over and over again, I am this close into installing  cctv cameras on my children and whatever clothes they are wearing.

My son asked his father the other day why things like this happen and all he could say was, there are bad people out there. Then we told him, as best as we can,  what he could do if he sensed something awful on the horizon. I know it’s necessary to educate our children about their safety but it drives me insane that I actually have and need to do it. Whatever happened to the days when you can walk or skip happily, safely, and innocently out in the neighborhood to visit Nan and Pop. Yah know?

Geography & Other Lessons At The Dining Table

globesMy son got the bug that’s been buzzing around last Friday which is the day after he went to school, which was 3 days after he’d been home for snow days. Yup, 3 days of no school, then the school finally opened on Thursday, then my son got sick on Friday. So overall, my son went to school for 1 day last week. He was sick all weekend and pretty much just getting over it yesterday which was a holiday. But of course, his sister got the bug so now it’s her turn. In a way I had 2 sick kids yesterday. To top it all off, our heater broke. It would blow heat but after 15 minutes a burning smell emanated around the house. It was actually like that all through weekend.

We were scared that it might burn the house down. Because it was a holiday yesterday, it was hard to find a Heater guy that could come over and fix it. So for a whole day yesterday, I played with the heater to keep me and my 2 sick kids all warm and cozy. I got tired of turning it on then turning it off after 15 minutes  therefore  I decided to just turn the heater off completely. I just bundled the kids up with layered clothing and sweaters.

Fatherhood & Cigars

cheap-cigars When I talked about making affordable gifts for  Father’s Day the other day, cheap cigars came to mind as well. See, Father’s Day next month is not the only occasion I am looking forward to celebrate. I have a few friends who are going to be first time parents too. What better way to celebrate that special day than smoking a cigar, right? Among other things of course. There’s a certain level of pride that cigar invokes which is akin to the pride you feel when you look into your newborn’s eyes and realize, “Wow, this child is mine. My wife and I are going to raise this precious being.” Then you’ll hear yourself promising the moon and stars and everything they’ll ever want in life.  You’d probably want to pump your chest with your fists and starts screaming like Tarzan out of pure joy and happiness. There’s just something about cigars and being proud which pairs harmoniously. That’s probably why it has become a common practice for new parents to distribute cigars once the baby is here as a way to celebrate.

If you search long and hard you’ll actually find novelty cigars which says “it’s a boy” or “it’s a girl”. There’s a novelty item for everything these days after all. I had them both for my children when they were born. My husband of course smoked them, and I saw that pride in his eyes too. Both times :) .  So if you know someone who’s about to become a Father or just became a Father, why not give them cigars for Father’s Day?
