Miss Universe Philippines Candidate Jacqueline Gulrajani’s National Costume

#SorryNotSorry but I’m appalled at this National Costume from Miss Universe Philippines candidate Jacqueline Gulrajani of Tacloban City. The costume is supposedly inspired by the Yolanda typhoon. A tribute to her city’s strength and resilience.

The costume itself has drowning people and houses as part of the details. Then, the photos had drowning people, houses, and vehicles in the background. Talk about TONE DEAF AF!

The head piece is fine – the EYE of the storm perhaps. The top portion is not that bad. They should’ve just continued that with the bottom piece without the gruesome details that should NEVER be romanticized at all. People died, people lost their homes, and way of living. Then to double down with the photo background(AI?) to present it, I just don’t understand where they thought that was a good idea.

If you want to represent the word reselient wouldn’t it have been better if instead of the drowning people and houses they made a fabric wrapped around the skirt with a vibrant graphic of people standing up or appearing to walk forward. With their boats or their families, proudly standing up maybe with one hand raised or maybe with the Philipines flag poignantly shown somehow.

That’s just my opinion of course. And FYI, this is just about the costume. I have nothing against Jacqueline Gulrajani. What do you all think?
